Journal, 1841 May 16-Nov. 5.

Journal of a member of the Bartleson-Bidwell party, the first wagon train from Missouri to California. Describes the scenery and the events of the journey, including the weather, miles travelled each day, game killed, and encounters with Indians. Among the members of the party mentioned are its leaders, John Bartleson and John Bidwell, and Josiah Belden, who became a prominent figure in California. John became separated from the party after crossing the Sierra Nevada and made his way to Sutter's fort at what is now Sacramento, where his account ends on Nov. 4. The last eight pages contain an extract in John's hand from Bidwell's journal from Oct. 20, when they were separated, to Nov. 5, when the rest of the party arrived at Mount Diablo.
